BRG Handicap Day - June 14 2008 - Gallery & Results

The fifth Bushranger Golf Handicap Day for 2008 was held at the new Eynesbury Golf Course in overcast but mostly calm conditions with just a sprinkle of drizzle threatening on the opening holes. More than a few Bushrangers struggled on this track as it kept throwing up the challenges. In the finish, it was a stellar round by old-school Bushranger tragic Paul Lambe who made off with the booty with an emphatic 41 points on a day when only four from a field of 36 managed to break their handicap. Tied in second were new member Matthew Thomas and wily veteran Ross Mitchell who both carded 38 points to finish three shots back. New members Richard Bastow and Mark Gemmola just missed the podium, closely followed by BRG Player of the Year leader Warwick "Boo" Stonehouse who was locked on 34 points with the great chino-packer Downtown Roger Brown who is beginning to make his move after a sluggish start to the year. The final results are below and the standings for the BRG POY have been updated.

The next BRG event is the 6th Handicap Day for the year at Tocumwal Golf Club on Friday July 18 from 11:30 am. This event is a warm up round for the mighty Kelly Gang Shootout at the same venue on that weekend. For more info, watch out for news items and keep an eye on the Event Schedule and the Handicap Day  page. Below is a small gallery of images with some of the special highlights of the day at Eynesbury.

Arbeige loads up on the fifth tee for his crack at one of the longest drives but he could not best the Bastow effort.

Pw_on_5.jpg

The tournament director celebrates one of his few highlights with a pash of the sand wedge after holing a remarkable shot from the right greenside bunker on the par five fifth to get his birdie-train rolling for the day. Unfortunately, the train derailed not long after this shot was taken.

Crocko consults with his driver, Roger, after hitting his approach to the par four ninth hole.

RB_approach_on_4.jpg

Roger doing a little approach work of his own - this time to the very long par four fourth hole. He went left with this, took three in the bunker and chalked up his first wipe of the day.

Seve_approach_to_9.jpg

The svelte Spaniard Seve backs up his blistering drive on the ninth with some sparkling iron play to the green.

Crocko takes a relaxed approach to Roger hammering his approach to the par four 14th green.

Then gets a little bit excited on the par five 16th after holing a masterful bunker shot from the cavernous beach at the front of the green.

17th_hole.jpg

The tricky little par four 17th hole that proved more difficult for some than others (see below).

Seve_17th_bunker.jpg

Seve getting his monies worth on the 17th. This was his next shot after his Adolf - two shots in the bunker. This didn't move far either and a wipe was waiting for him on the green.

Study_on_18.jpg

Some brains start getting into gear on the 18th tee as Crock, Seve & Arby examine the yardage book and try to pick a route down the 18th that will avoid the creek cutting the fairway.

RB__IC___MM_on_18th_green.jpg

Safely home the boys shape up over their par efforts on the 18th green....except for Roger who found the creek with his drive, dropped then pulled left, then adolfed, before chipping up to the green.

Beerage.jpg

In the cafe at Eynesbury after the round, the Bushrangers finally started playing to their strengths having swapped golf clubs for pots.

Rossco___booty.jpg

In equal 2nd place was perennial podium finisher Ross Mitchell of Bushranger Golf partner Nesso. This was his first start since winning the Handicap Day at Waterford Valley in July 2007.

Tying Rossco for second was Matthew Thomas - here he is collecting his booty and being warned by the tournament director about the paparazzi lurking nearby.
