BRG Handicap Day Results - July 17 2009 - Rich River West

The seventh Victorian Bushranger Golf Handicap Day for 2009 was held on The West Course (the Old Course) at Rich River Golf Club in fine conditions. A field of 15 scoundrels lined up to play a Stableford competition as part of the preparation for the mighty Kelly Gang Shootout being staged over the weekend.

When the dust had settled, BRG founding member Scott Wilson (pictured below lining up on the par three 4th hole) had left the field in his wake with a sparkling round scoring 43 points. Tournament Director and resident scoundrel Matthew Pitt had his best round for the year to place second with 40 points and Richard Fellner shot 39 points to take out third place and vault up the standings in the Victorian BRG Player of the Year.

Current POY leader (and defending champion), Matt Thomas, took out the Nearest the Pin on the tricky fourth hole and Ian Crotty unleashed himself on the 17th to easily account for the Long Drive for the day. Below are the final results.

After the results of the Handicap Day and the Kelly Gang Shootout held on the weekend, Matt Thomas has maintained his lead in the BRG POY but a lot of movement has taken place below him with the mountain of points on offer over the weekend. Richard Fellner has moved into second place ahead of Warren Birchall and Dave Regenspurger and early runaway leader John Hearne now sits in fifth place. Neil Hocking has vaulted into sixth place thanks to his win in the KGS and shares the distinction with Rob Lugton (in 8th place) of having played in every event so far this year.

Although Matt T is now 10 points clear in top spot in the POY, the field is set to start reeling him in as he is the only player so far to have scored points in six events. He now needs to beat his worst score to add to his Best Six Events points tally, whereas none of the chasing pack have yet scored in six events so they will make up ground more quickly. There is still a long way to go in the 2009 POY but things are certainly starting to get interesting. The William Buckley Classic weekend in October looks like having a massive influence on the final standings.
