BRG Handicap Day - October 24 2008 - Gallery & Results

The ninth Bushranger Golf Handicap Day for 2008 was held at The Dunes Golf Links in sunny conditions as a prelude to the 2008 William Buckley Classic on the Mornington Peninsula. A robust field of 18 scoundrels set out and most got the better of the course in benign conditions with the top 11 place-getters all within six shots of each other and scoring between nett 3 under and 3 over. It was a perfect day for golf with the breeze hardly getting over a zephyr and sunny skies providing clear visibility. In the end, another count-back was needed to separate the leaders with three players tying with a score of nett 3 under 69.

After some serious head-scratching, Mark Gemmola was delared the winner with new member Liam Anderson in 2nd and BRG stalwart and BRG Player of the Year contender Warwick Stonehouse in third place. Liam also took out the Longest Drive with a monstrous blow on the 18th and The Hamburglar pinched the Nearest the Pin on the third hole. Willo was shooting a blinder and looked a certainty to win as he walked off the 14th green at nett 5-under par with four to play. Alas, a monster blow out on the par five 15th (a hole this correspondant comfortably parred) put an end to his chances. The final results are below and the standings for the BRG Player of the Year have been updated.

The next BRG event will be the 10th Handicap Day for the year at Settlers Run Golf Course on Saturday November 16 from 9am. For more info, watch out for news items and keep an eye on the Event Schedule and the Handicap Day  page. Below is a gallery of images with some of the special highlights of the day at The Dunes.

Willo, Mark & Stolzy watch as Boo takes a swing on the par three 3rd - the nearest the pin hole.

Seve hits his second shot on the long par five fifth hole.

Da King powers up to hit his second shot over Tom Watson's bunker on the par five 7th hole. Liam is lurking in the top right corner, having a look over the dune to pick his line for his second shot.

Magic_wand.JPG

The way he hit them, he appeared to have magic wands in his bag. Here Liam's club is shimmering to help with the illusion of golfing ridiculosity as they prepare for their second shot on the par five 7th hole.

Seve in good form and on a roll as he winds up for his drive on the tough par four 8th hole.

Mikey Dee waves to his fans as Pritch lines up his drive on the par four 10th hole. Arbeige & Lambo (obscured) look on.

Willo and Boo look on as Stolzy lines up his long putt on the sheltered green on the par four 10th hole.

The road to birdie town. Seve sets off on the eleventh hole on his way to back-to-back birdies and a blistering start to the back nine.

King_in_sand.JPG

Da King visits the beach for his 2nd shot after his drive on the par five 12th hole drifted right into the sandy wasteland.

Seve playing his recovery shot with typical style to the elevated green on the par four 14th hole.

Dubs_chips_on_14.JPG

Dubs chipping for birdie on the 14th. Meanwhile Liam waits at his ball on the green to line up his eagle putt after driving the green. Whatever.

Liam watches Seve play his second shot to the long and challenging par four 16th hole.

Seve_tees_17.JPG

Seve strikes another classic pose as he watches his tee shot on the wonderful par three 17th hole at The Dunes.

Liam_drives_17.JPG

Liam hits his tee shot on the 17th. We are guessing he picked the left greenside bunkers as the danger and chose to tee on the same side to try and take them out of play. Although things look (sort of) ok here, it didn't really work out for him after this At this exact moment he was leading the event, but a few seconds later he missed the green, then failed to get up-and-down, parred the last, tied with Gemmo & Boo with nett 69 and came second after the count back.

King_smiles_on_18.JPG

Da King preparing to dazzle his many fans with an ambitious effort with the fairway metal out of the incidental rough to the right of the 18th fairway.

18th_pin.JPG

Liam has a chuckle at the 18th after Dubs rattled the pin from long range with a precocious attempt at birdie after announcing his intention to delight the gallery with his short game wizardry. Dubs coolly made his tap in par to seal one of the most brilliant and inspiring gross 90's ever played at The Dunes.

Peanut_gallery_by_18.JPG

The gallery by the 18th was in raptures. Shortly after this picture was taken, several of these fans fainted.

In the clubhouse afterwards, Mark Gemmola who won on count back, shares a laugh with Warwick Stonehouse. Both players shot gross 69's to make a three-way tie with Liam Anderson.
