The 2009 Bushranger Cup Results
|
The 6th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula, the scene of the ripping Cup of 2007, and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of April 17, 18 & 19. This year we had seven teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up and, as is the tradition, the reigning champions are the most recent and infamous bushrangers of all, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang. The event details were:
When: April 17, 18 & 19, 2009
Where: The Cups, Cape Schanck & Eagle Ridge
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying at Sunset Views Lodge
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes
Sadly, two foundation Cuppers were unable to attend: 2005 Champion Dom Doomsday Wall has rolled up his swag and decamped to the exotic fairways of the far-east and 2007 Champion The Shabby Lieutenant has gone a droving and we don't know where he are. This means we now have just nine exclusive Bushrangers who have attended every Cup:
Arbeige, Bastros, Boo, Crocko, Da King, Dee, Dubs, The Hominator & Willo.

Starting out on the par 33 Cups Course at The Dunes Golf Links, the scoring was low from the outset. The rounds were all played in near perfect conditions with hardly a breath of wind on any of the days. As a result, the scoring was the furthest under par we have ever seen at a Bushranger Cup, with players and teams smashing records all over the place. Terry Robinson got the day off to a flying start by holing a 9-iron for eagle on the second hole and Russell Gruen smashed the round one individual scoring record with a nett 8-under par round. The scores stayed low on day two with every team but two scoring under par in benign conditions at Cape Schanck on Saturday.
After two days The Aaron Sherritt Gang had pulled away to a six shot lead but there was plenty of drama to come on the final day at Eagle Ridge. After 17 holes, The Stringybark Creek Freaks had reeled in the deficit and both teams teed off on the final hole standing at 24 under par for the tournament. Playing as the penultimate group, the Freaks got a big drive away and a long second shot that only left a short pitch to the green. Team captain Mikey Dee, the self-proclaimed greatest ambrose golfer in the world, knocked it to about four feet and Simmo tidied up for birdie.
The Aaron Sherritt Gang playing last played two solid shots on 18 that left eighty metres to the pin and they needed an up-and-down for a birdie to tie the scores. A wonderful approach by Diesel Dave gave them a 25-foot birdie chance to tie the scores. In a most dramatic finish, the final putt by Diesel looked like it was rolling in but refused to take the final break and stopped just inches from the hole, leaving the Freaks the 2009 Bushranger Cup Champions.
