The 2012 Bushranger Cup Results
The 9th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of March 30 - April 1. This year we had nine teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champs are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang. The event details were:
When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday March 30, 31 &April 1 2012
Where: Rosebud CC, Moonah Links Legends and Open Courses
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying in Deluxe Villas at the Moonah Links Golf Academy.
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes
Sadly, two foundation Cuppers and past champions who have played every year, Arbeige and Da King, could not make it this year. This means we had six exclusive Bushrangers who have played every Cup. They are:
Bastros, Boo, Crocko, Dee, Dubs & The Hominator.

Starting out at The Rosebud Country Club, the scores were very even on day one except for one bolter and one straggler. There was just four shots between 2nd and 8th place with The Ben Hall Gang shooting all the best first round scores to bolt to a 10-shot lead and the Stringybark Creek Freaks dropping anchor to be seven shots behind the team in 8th place.
Saturday on The Legends Course at Moonah Links was a different story will all the scores between 65 and 75 and the whole field bunching up after the overnight leaders failed to press home their advantage with each pair shooting a 74. If one of the Ben Hall Gang pairs had shot a great round or both had played solid rounds, they may have shut the door on the field, but the swoopers came out on moving day and when the dust had settled on Saturday, there were four teams in contention for the 2012 Bushranger Cup. Thanks to a brilliant 65 (best round of the day) from Diesal and Ho, The Kelly Gang held a slender lead going into the final day with The Captain Melvilles two back, the Canvas Town Mob four back and the Ben Hall Gang five back.
After two days, 54 holes were completed and the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish. Given that the Stringybark Creek Freaks had come from seven shots back in 2009 and the Saturday night leader had been mown down in each of the last three years, the Cup was wide open going into the final round. In the end, the tournament was the closest blanket finish we have ever had with nothing between the top five teams until deep into the back nine on Sunday.
When the final groups teed off on Sunday, after deducting the Sunday handicaps, there was one shot separating the top four teams as they stood on the first tee with the Kelly Gang on - 8 and the Ben Hall Gang, the Captain Melvilles and the Canvas Town Mob all on - 7. After the front nine, the leaders had fallen to fourth with an even par front nine to remain on - 8 while the other three contenders had all shot under par and moved ahead. The Captain Melvilles were - 10 while the Ben Hall Gang and the Canvas Town Mob were locked together on - 9. Meanwhile the Aaron Sherritt Gang were scorching up the course and had joined the party and made the turn at - 5.
After five holes of the back nine, the whole field had bunched up and just three shots separated the top five teams. The Ben Hall Gang were leading on - 10, the Kelly Gang and the Captain Melvilles were one back on - 9, the Canvas Town Mob were on - 8 and the Aaron Sherritt Gang had moved up to - 7. Then all hell broke loose over the closing four holes. Having only managed to get to one under through 14 holes, the Kelly Gang birdied the short par five 15th, then hit their approach close on 16 for another birdie. On the 17th, Diesal holed a massive putt to make it three birdies in a row. Coming home with a wet sail, they bombed balls all the way down the 18th to finish with four birdies in a row over the closing holes to split the field open and become the first team in Bushranger Cup history to successfully defend the title.

Above we see The Kelly Gang (Dave Warwick, Richard Mitchell, Nick Honey & Matthew Pitt) enjoying receiving the greatest prize in Australian social golf - The Bushranger Cup.
