The 2018 Bushranger Cup Results
|
The 15th Bushranger Cup returned to the Mornington Peninsula and was played on three great golf courses on the weekend of March 23 - 25. This year we had seven teams of rabid and ferocious highwaymen line up to contest the greatest prize in Australian social golf. As is the tradition, the reigning champs are considered the most recent and infamous bushrangers, and so had the honour of competing as The Kelly Gang. The event details were:
When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday March 23, 24 & 25 2018
Where: Rosebud CC, The Dunes and Moonah Legends
What: 45 holes of mayhem over three days
How: Staying in Deluxe Villas at the Moonah Links Golf Academy.
Who: Mates playing & laughing in teams of four
Why: For loads of fun, trophies & prizes
This year we had two more Bushranger Cup Champions join the 10-Cups Club as Richard 'Saddam’ Mitchell & 'Diesal’ Dave Warwick saddled up for the 10th time. This means we have 11 exclusive Bushrangers who have played 10 Cups or more:
Arbeige, Boo, Crocko, Dee, Diesal, Dubs, Kingo,
Quigley, Saddam, The Hominator & The Rose.

The 2018 Cup started in classic fashion at Rosebud Country Club with a superb sunny afternoon and the golf course in great condition with fast greens. Things were tight early with just ten shots between first and last place and just a few strokes between the leaders. The Stringybark Creek Freaks, The Captain Melvilles and The Aaron Sherritt Gang held he top three spots with 68, 70 & 72 respectively.
Saturday at The Dunes Golf Links was an intriguing day of golf with stormy conditions in the morning with showers throughout the morning. The skies cleared in time for our PM tee off and by the back nine we had clear, sunny blue skies. It was a close day with just seven shots between the best and worst scores – 66 to 73. The field bunched up with just seven shots separating the top five teams. The biggest lead ever chased down was nine shots, so these five teams were in contention going into the final day and the tournament was set up for a thrilling and dramatic finish.
On Sunday the wind got up, the skies were overcast and threatening.and then all hell broke loose at Moonah Links. Midway through the round a front passed through that brought howling wind and sideways rain. It passed in about 10 minutes and the weather was superb after that with the back nine played mostly in sunshine. Every team made birdies and every team scored between 63 and 69. The swoopers came with The Kelly Gang and The Aaron Sherritt Gang both shooting 63s.
When the scorer had set down his abacus there was just 10 shots between all the teams and The Stringybark Creek Freaks, with a closing 64, held on for a wire-to-wire finish, winning by two shots.
